Overview Of The University Of Waterloo

The University of Waterloo is a public research university in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. The university also has three satellite campuses and four university colleges. Six faculties and thirteen faculty-based schools conduct academic programs at the institution. With over 20,000 undergraduate students participating in the university’s co-op program, Waterloo has the world’s biggest post-secondary co-operative education program. Waterloo is a member of Canada’s U15, a network of research-intensive institutions.

The Waterloo College Associate Faculties, founded on April 4, 1956, was a semi-autonomous body of Waterloo College, an associate of the University of Western Ontario. With the University of Waterloo Act adopted by the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in 1959, this body effectively split from Waterloo College and was constituted as a university.

It was founded to meet the increased need for engineers and technicians in Canada’s postwar economy. Over the following decade, it expanded significantly, acquiring a college of arts in 1960 and the College of Optometry of Ontario (now the School of Optometry and Vision Science), which relocated from Toronto in 1967.

In 2020, the university had roughly 36,000 undergraduate students and 6,200 postgraduate students. Waterloo alumni and former students may be found all around Canada and in over 150 countries, and the institution has produced several award winners, government officials, and business executives. Waterloo’s varsity teams, known as the Waterloo Warriors, participate in the U Sports’ Ontario University Athletics league.

Waterloo attracts world-class scholars, including a Nobel Laureate, leads in providing work-integrated learning opportunities with 7,100+ active co-op employers, and fosters an entrepreneurial spirit that has created 5,000+ jobs through Velocity alone, Canada’s most productive startup incubator by private investment.
